A used RV can be a great deal or an expensive mistake. This is what to check before you hand over a deposit.
The short version: A used RV hides its worst problems well. Water damage and a tired roof are the expensive ones, and they do not show up on a quick walkthrough. Check carefully, or have someone independent check for you, before any money changes hands.
The Listing Never Shows The Real Problems
A used RV can look fantastic in photos and on a sunny test walkthrough, and still carry thousands of dollars in hidden trouble. Soft floors from an old leak, a roof on its last year, slide-outs that do not seat right, weak brakes and electrical gremlins do not announce themselves. By the time they surface, the sale is done and the problems are yours. The goal of buying used is to find those issues before you sign, not after.
What To Check Before You Buy
- Roof and seals: look for cracked sealant, soft spots and lifting edges
- Water damage: press on floors, walls and ceilings for soft or spongy areas and watch for stains or a musty smell
- Slide-outs: cycle every slide fully in and out and watch how it seats
- Leveling system: run it and confirm it lifts and holds without errors
- Appliances and systems: test the AC, fridge, water heater, furnace, plumbing and electrical
- Brakes and running gear: on a towable, check brakes, bearings and tires for age and wear
- Body and structure: look for repairs, damage and signs of bigger past problems
- History: ask about leaks, repairs, accidents and how the rig was stored
The Three Problems That Cost The Most
Most expensive surprises on a used RV fall into one of these three buckets. Knowing them tells you where to look hardest.
Water Damage
The number one used RV killer. A slow leak rots the floor, walls and framing from the inside, and by the time it is visible the repair is major. Press on every soft surface and trust your nose for any musty smell.
A Tired Roof

Slide & Leveling Faults
Slides and leveling systems are mechanical, electrical and sometimes hydraulic. A slide that does not seat right or a leveling system that throws errors can mean an expensive repair right after purchase.
