Texas Summer Pre-Trip RV Checklist
Texas heat is hard on a rig. Run through this checklist before a summer trip so a breakdown does not end your vacation on the shoulder of the highway.
The short version: Texas summer heat punishes tires, brakes, AC and roofs. A short pre-trip check of the things most likely to fail in the heat is the difference between a smooth trip and a long wait on the shoulder.
Heat Finds Every Weak Spot
Summer in Texas is brutal on an RV. Pavement heat and high speed cook tires until a weak one lets go. Brakes and bearings run hotter and wear faster. The air conditioner works overtime and quits at the worst possible moment. The roof bakes under UV and any tired seal gives up. A breakdown in this heat is not just inconvenient, it can be dangerous. A short check before you leave catches most of it.
Run Through This Before You Leave
- Tires: check pressure cold and inspect for cracks, bulges and uneven wear
- Brakes and bearings: confirm they are serviced and not overdue for inspection
- Air conditioning: run it and make sure it cools well before you rely on it
- Roof and seals: scan for cracked sealant or soft spots that heat and rain will exploit
- Fluids: check engine and generator oil, coolant and other fluids
- Battery and power: confirm the battery holds and shore and 12 volt systems work
- Slides and leveling: cycle them once to be sure they seat and retract cleanly
- Safety gear: test smoke, carbon monoxide and propane detectors and check the extinguisher

Check tires the night before
Tire pressure reads accurately when the tires are cold, so check the evening before you leave rather than after an hour on hot pavement.

Pack for the heat
Carry extra drinking water, sun shades for the windshield and a plan for keeping the fridge cold if you stop. Texas summer is not the place to find out the AC is weak.

Know your weak points
If something acted up on your last trip, address it now. Heat makes small issues worse, and the roadside is the most expensive place to deal with them.
